The new USB 3.0 Interface, which is named „SuperSpeed“, is the successor to the widespread USB 2.0 Interface. Key feature of USB 3.0 is it’s full downward compatibility to the old USB 2.0 standard.
All current devices can be used on new USB 3.0 controllers. Also new USB 3.0 devices can be used with older USB 2.0 systems, but speed will be reduced.
USB 3.0 is capable of transferring up to 5Gbit data per second (625MB/s) which is more than 10 times faster than it’s predecessor. The achieve this performance, new cables and connectors were introduced. In addition, USB 3.0 can deliver almost twice as much power ( 4.5 watts instead of 2.5 watts). A new and intelligent power management prevents waste of energy.
Windows XP and newer Windows versions support the new USB 3.0 Standard, as does Linux with Kernel 2.631 and above.
